Women Police
In December 1948 a female branch of the Police Department was formed. Over fifty applicants were interviewed and three women were subsequently appointed: Miss S.M. Myers of Fairfield, Manchester and Misses Florence Nelson and Iris Tulloch both of Kingston.
They started training on 3 January 1949 for three months on similar lines to their male counterparts except for drilling with rifles. Instead they were instructed in methods of protection against violence. Their early duties were confined to warding and taking statements from women and juvenile prisoners.
