Message from the Minister of National Security
Sen. The Hon. Col. Trevor MacMillan, CD, JP
The security of the nation is one of the primary responsibilities of any state, if not the primary responsibility.
Unless governments can assure their citizens of security from crime and violence and the creation of an environment in which economic and social development can be facilitated, the state will constantly be on the brink of failure.
As Minister of National Security, I recognize this fact, and I can assure you that the government, of which I am a member, also recognizes it.
It is the realization of this fundamental requirement that has influenced us into making a commitment that, as an administration, we will make the reduction of crime and violence a top priority.
We recognize that unless we can create the climate in which Jamaicans feel proud of their country and want to cooperate to ensure that it succeeds, both economically and socially; there is no hope for genuine development.
In pursuit of this goal, we also recognize the importance of improving the relationship between the police and the people in the pursuit of a common will to tackle this twin evil.
In order to create this coalition, we need to win the confidence of the people and earn their trust.
We are committed to creating modern channels of communication and partnership between the people and the Jamaica Constabulary Force to ensure that the people understand these objectives and are willing to cooperate for the common good.
Modern technology has made a tremendous impact on all aspects of our public life, and has created opportunities for better management of the police force and for more efficient investigation of criminal offences, and I hope that this website will help to make the force more transparent and its efforts more understandable.
I assure the public that as long as I am your Minister of National Security, you can rest assured that your security and you well being will remain a major focus.
My job is to ensure that the police force, including the JCF and its auxiliaries, continue the mission to serve, protect and reassure the people of Jamaica - through the delivery of impartial and professional services aimed at maintaining law and order; protecting life and property; preventing and detecting crime; and preserving the peace.
My commitment is to do so to the very best of my ability without fear or favour.
I also assure the security forces of my fullest support in all crime and violence prevention measures which observe the human and civil rights of all our citizens, irrespective of class, colour, race, political or religious affiliation.
I believe that, on the basis of this commitment, we will be able to reduce crime and violence and recreate the kind of society for which so many Jamaicans hope and pray each day.
