Community Security Initiative (CSI) Project
The Community Security Initiative is intended to strengthen human security in the most marginalized and violent communities in Jamaica. It seeks to do this by facilitating coordinated partnerships that promote and synthesize security and social inclusion at both the local and national levels. In particular the CSI encourages actions and partnerships by promoting security and freedom from fear at the community level, by enhancing the reach, quality and regularity of public services, and by including police and justice services. The Project seeks to strengthen community capacity for autonomous development actions and to increase the voice of residents/citizens in wider governance, planning and policy processes
Citizen Security & Justice Programme (CSJP)
The Citizens Security and Justice Programme (CSJP), implemented by MNS, addresses both the “hard” and “soft” issues around policing in an integrated approach at the community level. The programme aims to enhance citizens’ security and justice through preventing and reducing crime and violence, strengthening crime management capabilities and improving the delivery of judicial services. CSJP is financed by the Inter-American Development Bank. The programme comprises the development of a national crime and violence prevention strategy, capacity enhancement of the MNS, strengthening the criminal justice system and community action.
Safe Schools Programme
The Safe Schools Programme is geared to reduce the incidence of violence in the core schools by 40% in three years and by 70% in five years. Primary objectives being to create safe schools where the physical, psychological and emotional environments are conducive to positive interactions and the teaching-learning experiences contribute substantially to the development of socially adjusted students, performing at their academic best in classrooms that are student-centred; and where relationships are based on mutual respect.
The project is coordinated through a secretariat established in the Ministry of National Security (MNS) and is implemented as a combined effort of multi-disciplinary and multi-agency initiative. The principal partners are the Ministry of National Security (MNS), the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture (MOEYC), The Jamaica Constabulary force (JCF), Ministry of Health (MOH) and The Coalition for Better Parenting supported by Jamaica Policy Evaluation (JASPEV) Project.
